The Sword of St. Maurice - Oakeshott XI.4 by Hanwei

This recreation of the Vienna Sword of Saint Maurice by Hanwei has a sharpened blade forged from 1566 high carbon steel; it has been tempered to a hardness of 52-54 HRC. The crossguard and pommel are steel and the wooden grip is tightly bound in brown leather. A leather tab is fitted atop the guard to cushion it from contact with the scabbard. The scabbard is crafted from wood and it is overlaid in leather and completed with a steel chape and locket.

This Sword of Saint Maurice that is housed in Vienna is dated to the late 11th to early 12th centuries and this recreation purposefully removes the later addition of a wire wrap to the grip to achieve a closer approximation of the earlier appearance of the sword at its creation.

Used as a coronation sword for the Holy Roman Empire, the pommel is engraved with the Arms of the Empire on one side and the heraldry of Emperor Otto IV on the reverse.

This replica is emblazoned across the crossguard with ‘’Christus Vincit, Christus Regnat, Christus Imperat’’ (Christ Conquers, Christ Reigns, Christ Rules) - words used as both a rallying cry of the Third Crusade as well as a part of the coronation anthem of the Holy Roman Empire.
